The Beginning of a Well Layered Journey

Jessica Burke Well Layered Journey

I am so excited to finally be able to say “Welcome to Well Layered”! It’s been a long road to get here and I want to start off my adventure by diving just a little bit deeper into why I started Well Layered, and most importantly, why I think you will LOVE following along.

Before I get into the good stuff, let’s get real for a second (there’s going to be a lot of real moments here on the blog.  I like those moments best).

Having a fashion blog isn’t a groundbreaking idea.  There is absolutely no shortage of amazingly talented photographers, stylists and creatives out there, all blogging about how much they love clothes.  There is a lot of noise and competition in the space online and honestly, it can be overwhelming even to the biggest fashion lovers among us.

You might be saying to yourself “Jess, you’re right! What are you thinking?”  Hear me out.

As someone who shops for fun, even I find that looking at my Instagram feed can feel exhausting and isolating at times.  Those seemingly perfect lives, beautifully curated all for our viewing pleasure, can seem forever out of reach.  To add insult to injury, people are often wearing pieces that cost the equivalent of most people’s (including mine) monthly paychecks.

Ummm…no. Who can compete with that? Most of us can’t, and you absolutely don’t have to.

Having great personal style AND beautiful pieces that speak to who you are is attainable and doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.  Bonus: you can do all of this without breaking the bank, and I’m going to prove it to you.

Fair warning: I’m going to get personal here.  I’m going to share my own stories and those of people who inspire me.  The content will be genuine and the resources supportive.  Every woman is on her own style adventure and each is beautiful.  I want to inspire your journey by keeping it real and sharing my own.

What does this all mean?  It means that there’s about to be a lot of positivity and honesty up in here.

Backing up for a second though…I can’t forget an important part of the journey of how all of this came to be.

I haven’t always felt comfortable in my body. I haven’t always loved clothes. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

My body woes over the years have mainly consisted of feeling that my pear-shaped body was out of proportion (we’ll talk more about body types later on, but very quickly, it just means smaller up top and larger on bottom).   I used to dread shopping for bottoms of any kind.  For years I thought that shorts were made specifically by some clothing devil to make me feel REALLY bad about myself.  I spent most of my teens and early 20s as a Victoria’s Secret padded bra connoisseur in order to “balance out” the proportions of my body.

Let’s just say, my closet is now full of pants and shorts that I now LOVE and I’ve swapped out my old collection of undergarments for pieces that are, well, appropriate.

The thing I’ve realized along my own style journey is that I used to dress to hide (or enhance in some instances) the areas that I wanted to change. I didn’t know any better and probably couldn’t even tell you one thing that I really liked about my body.  So many women out there have this mindset and for no good reason.

For good measure, the things I now love about my body are my curvy backside (ahem, booty!), super strong shoulders and back and the fact that I can wear pretty much any top that I want without fear of the “ladies” accidentally coming out to say hello.

The mission of Well Layered is to help women change that mindset and provide genuine, real resources to put that new mindset into action.

I’ve been able to do it for myself and I can’t wait to leave some inspiration for all of you beauties out there to do the same for yourself! I know what the RIGHT clothes have done for me and the power that they have to transform the way we take on the world.

So friend, grab a cup of coffee and get comfortable. This is going to be a beautiful journey and I’m so excited to have you on board for the ride.

I have a lot of ideas of what I will be sharing with you all but also want to best curate Well Layered’s content for YOU! If you have a burning question that can’t wait, pretty please let me know HERE

In love and body positivity,

Jess
