New Years Eve Style For A Purposeful Start To 2018
I doubt I’m alone when I say 2017 has been a DOOZY. This year induced more self-reflection and transition than I ever could have imagined.
And I couldn’t be more grateful for all of it.
Nevertheless, it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. Let’s wrap 2017 and ring in the new year with a fresh calendar and a freaking awesome outfit.
New Years Eve for me is typically spent doing something fairly low-key. You won’t find me at the club ordering bottle service (no judgment at all if that’s your jam!) but just because I’m not going OUT, doesn’t mean I’m not dressing UP. Ringing in the new year can look however you want it to look, but whatever your chosen activity, it’s way more fun when you wear something pretty.
Dressing up on New Years Eve is not only a way to celebrate the possibilities of the new year to come, but also to commemorate all of the things that have occurred. Whether painful or happy, challenging or easy, our lives are meant to be remembered.
Being purposeful about what you wear on New Years Eve is a lovely and meaningful way to appropriately close one door in your life and welcome the opening of another.
Go big or go home
Or, if you are like me and you are already home: “go big AND go home!” Volume is the name of the game this December 31st. Think throwback poufy sleeves, long flowy dresses and oversized faux fur coats. Less is more doesn’t apply here…when everyone else is wearing a barely-there LBD, rock that tulle ball skirt like it’s your JOB.
Change up the makeup routine
This one can be tough, especially for me; I’m the girl who has swapped between two lip colors for the last three years. I wear only one color of eyeliner and my makeup bag consists of two eye shadows: one shimmery and one not shimmery. I love to invest in high quality makeup but I wouldn’t say I’m all that interested in a plethora of options.
Then my talented friend put this lip color on me. It’s dark and vamp-y and if lipstick were on a spectrum from preppy-chic to badass, this would be on the opposite end from my go-to Mac lipstick “snob”. At first, I was apprehensive…but then I was like “DAAAAMN GIRL!”
If you are going to experiment with a makeup update to take you out of your everyday routine, New Years Eve is the night to do it.
Metallic pieces are honestly one of the easiest ways to elevate a look. I would typically say to try to keep them to a minimum, but hey, New Years Eve only comes once a year! If you have a gold metallic dress, don’t be afraid to add a silver metallic belt. Shimmery metallic and glittery footwear have been everywhere this season and this is surely the perfect occasion to bust them out.
Bonus: combine this tip with the previous one of updating your makeup routine and try out a shimmery metallic rose gold eyeshadow or a new nail polish color.
Jump Around (In a jumpsuit)
If you haven’t jumped (pun intended) on this train yet it’s about darn time! Jumpsuits aren’t going anywhere and there is a good reason: they are super versatile and crazy fun to wear. Whenever I am wearing one I feel super powerful and I think you probably will too.
Style tip warning: Getting really real for a second…you need to be prepared for the fact that it just will take you longer to go to the bathroom when wearing a jumpsuit. If you are going to a busy club maybe a jumpsuit isn’t your best option.
